Discovery

I wrote a short reverse press release to outline our take on a ___ ____ and mocked up a few screens as illustrations. We turned that into a white paper that could be taken to an upcoming policing conference.
One of the people who read the white paper was in charge of a nationwide project to bring ____________ ___ _____ online. She agreed to a meeting with us, where she explained:
- ___ _____ __ ___ _____ - _ _______________ ______ __ ____ _ __________ _______ ___ ____ ___ __ ____ __ _______ _______ _________ __ _____
- ___ ____ ______ __ __ ______ - __ ____ _____ __ ________ __ _________
- and pointed out all the incorrect assumptions in my press release - of which there were many
Based on the her information, I produced a new version of the writing and mocks, plus some initial uses cases and personae. This demonstrated enough understanding of the problem for her to invite me to present at the multi-organisation working group responsible for the national programme.
Prototyping and feedback
I built a basic prototype of the ______ ___ ____ using React and the Material UI component library for speed. I presented this to the working group and they provided more feedback and use cases particular to their organisations. I attended every meeting over the following few months, taking a new iteration of the prototype each time.
I requested access to end users and the working group arranged for me to take the prototype to a series of training exercises. By the end of the programme, 120 users had tested the prototype. I quantitatively observed their interactions and conducted ethnographic observations with 6 users. This surfaced some key learnings and a host of novel usability issues, which were rolled in iteratively.

Production
The presentation was successful, and the project was green-lit. I collaborated with engineering to break down the prototype's functionality into stories.
Drawing on my accumulated understanding of ___ _______, I wrote the PRD for data storage, ensuring it was provably contemporaneous and unaltered. Together with engineering, we developed the technical architecture to meet these requirements.
I redesigned the UI to fit with the other apps in the company's suite, using and extending the in-house design system.

Conclusion
It was a valuable opportunity to own and run an important, nuanced and cross-functional project. I was able to nurture the customer relationship, building trust through prototyping, iteration and execution. It reinforcing the value of user-centered design and agile methodologies in delivering impactful solutions. Ultimately, I was able to leverage my experience to deliver a solution that relied on both design and technology.
